PROJECT SR250: Engine, Wheels, Tank, and Mocking things up.

In case you don't already follow the Instagram or Facebook outlets, here's a list of some updates to the SR250 build that have happened over the past month or so.

The hardware came back from the plater and allowed me to get the engine back together. There are only 9k miles on her so all the internals still look fresh. She got all new gaskets and seals with a few other odds and ends. Externally, the cylinder and head were blasted and the cases were all brushed.

New mounting points were fabbed up for the Honda CD175 tank, and I hand made rubber bushings for them out of some door stoppers from Home Depot. The durometer happens to be very similar to stock bushings.

After that I threw everything together for a quick visual of how things were lining up. I finished the seat pan, mocked up the padding , and it's now at the upholsterer. It's scheduled to come back by the end of the week.

Above, I took a grinder to the CD tank's side covers so that the custom knee pads I'm making can mount up.

Mounted the Bridgestone Spitfire tires to the newly painted wheels. The front got a 120 while the rear got a 150. They're fat without the "ph."

With the tires now mounted I was able to again rough everything together so i could check clearances for the battery box I'll need to make. Under the swingarm is looking like a nicely concealed spot. I'll start hashing out the new wiring soon as well.

That's all for now. After the battery box is made up the frame should be ready to go out for powder. I'm eager to see how the seat comes out. More soon...

  1. Is that a rendering posted on the board behind the mockup shot, or just another bike for inspiration?

    1. The cylinder and head are blasted, the case is stock paint, and the covers are brushed raw.

    2. Hi
Nice build! I found a Honda CB750 F her in Portugal.
The stock paint on the engine and cylinder head have some marks and I am wondering what to do with it.
Did you treat the cylinder and head with something after sandblasting it? And did you give the covers a clear coat for protection after brushing?

  4. Where did you find the lower cylinder gasket? I found the others but that one seems hard to find.

Great work so far. I am building one too, just going a little different direction.

    1. Yamaha stocks pretty much everything for this bike still. You can also compare prices with www.yamahapartshouse.com/ and http://www.babbittsonline.com/yamaha-motorcycle-parts

  5. Awesome bike!!! Have you changed the carburetor jetting? What`s the best jetting for the pot filters?

    1. Still working on that but after talking to many different owners the jetting varies quite a bit from bike to bike, even when running a similar setup.

  7. How did you fit tubeless tires onto the stock wheels? My boyfriend just bought an SR250 and is looking for tires, and he's possibly considering changing the wheels since he hasn't had much luck finding tires that fit the wheels.

  8. Going to use the same tires for my SR build. Did I read somewhere that the 150 on the rear didnt clear the chain? What was your remedy for this? I think you said it was 5mm.

    1. If I did it again I'd use a 140.

    2. I was thinking, as I read the stock was a 120-how a 150 seemed massive. I'll heed your advice, 140 or 130 it is. Thanks man!
