PROJECT CX: Gets A New Exhaust

The CX previously had the MAC 2-1 exhaust on it. That system comes with a megaphone "muffler," ...and I stress those quotations. It's not a muffler as much as its just 2 cross over pipes wedged into a megaphone. Needless to say, it sounded kind of like shit.

I wanted to keep the 2-1 piping, so I would need to source a 2" muffler. I dig the shorty style mufflers, and picked up the shortest Cherry Bomb I could find - an 8" (12" total), 2"in. 2" out. I've been running this for a couple weeks now, testing out the sound, and I love it. It's loud, but deep and thumpy. It only starts screaming a bit when you get into the higher RPMs.

I deemed it worthy, and decided to clean it up:

 This is your powdercoat.

This is your powdercoat on aircraft stripper.

It's kind of beautiful and kind of makes me want to throw up.

 ...and wipe away.

3 coats of satin black high temp engine enamel.

And the final touch - new heat wrap with black powdercoated stainless steel cable ties.

You can get these ties from JEGS, however I should let you know, they suck. The ball style, "self locking" mechanism in them has about 3-4mm of travel, which means you can pull as hard as you want, but the tie will release back 3-4mm. This means if the object you're clamping down doesn't have any give to it (like say, a metal pipe) the ties won't be very tight. I've since found a store that sells black anodized worm drive hose clamps that will be going on instead.

  1. I'm looking forward to seeing how these look on the bike! Out of curiosity, why did you decide against the crinkly red paint used on the previous pipe?

  2. The VHT red crinkle coat, although labeled "high-heat" started to burn and turn dark reddish brown towards the inlet. I've asked around and wasn't able to find any local shops that could do red wrinkle high heat powdercoat.

I'm still on the fence as to whether I like the new muffler in black better then the original plan of a red muffler.

  3. Looks awesome, and a great idea for what I'm working on with my bike.

Question about the wrap...is that 1" or 2" and what length did you need for your 2-1? Your bike has me thinking white for mine too. Great minds think alike – or at least copy what they like ;)

  4. 50' of 2" wrap with a 50% overlap was enough for the 2-1 with a good amount left over. Mines DEI tan wrap. (However, if you leave it in the rain a few times, it'll end up becoming white.)

  5. i'd love to hear how it sounds, i dig the beige wrap with satin black muffler and tip, i've been thinking about ditching the megaphone muffler off my mac 2-1 and this looks like damn good idea.

  6. What length exhaust tip did you use?

  7. I chopped it off a much longer piece. I'm not sure exactly, I just eye-balled it.

    1. I believe I got them from JEGS. Don't buy their "metal zip ties" though, because they don't hold.

  11. Can you confirm the diameter of the Mac?? Along with the Cherry bomb??

I tried looking for the info of the Mac and couldn't find the diameter, but found that the Cherry bomb exhaust was a 2.5in on both sides.

  12. Do you remember how the 2 brackets that came with the exhaust mount on?? I can't seem to figure it out.

Also, Does your headers rub against the engine??

    1. No rubbing on the headers. They should have plenty of clearance. I needed to make a new bracket due to the muffler change.
